Music For Youth Coronation Bandstand Takeover
North Tyneside Music Education Hub were awarded funding from Music For Youth to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III in a Bandstand project at Richardson Dees Park, Wallsend. The event took place in the park bandstand on Saturday 6th May with over 3000 people attending the event and enjoying the celebration with an afternoon tea and beautiful sunshine.
The day began with our brass ensemble who skilfully performed a royal fanfare from the bandstand at 11am, just as the King arrived at Westminster Abbey.
Young people from our Standing Upright group managed and led the rest of the day’s programme with great professionalism.
A variety of performances and activities took place over the course of the day including a samba/body percussion session with the public, marching around the bandstand to Carnival de Paris. Two of our talented folk players performed music from around the British Isles, followed by a song writing session while children chalked flags and made instruments around the bandstand.
Following more exceptional performances from our young people across the day we finished with a vocal performance of ‘Sing for the King’ joined by the local community. The coronation was broadcast by local radio, and commemorative merchandise was sold by Richardson Dees Park.
The event was filmed by local film maker David Pethick and will be available to view on our YouTube channel shortly.
Special thanks to Susie Jones and the ‘Standing Upright’ team for making this such a memorable day.
